Water Supply Update
Serving the Communities of Hingham, Hull, & North Cohasset

According to the Massachusetts Drought Task Force and the U.S. Drought Monitor, the drought of 2016/2017 is officially over. The precipitation amount recorded at the Water Treatment Plant in Hingham for the month of April was 8.21 inches, which is 4.13 inches above average for the month of April. In addition, we are currently 6.5 inches above the average year to date. However, there is still a 2.5 inch deficit carry over from last year. As you may recall, we ended 2016 with a precipitation deficit of more than 9 inches. Groundwater and surface water levels have continued to rise and are now at normal levels. As of the end of April 2017, Accord Pond was at 103% capacity, and overflowing the spillway, which is normal for this time of year.

Although surface water and groundwater levels have returned to normal, we will continue to monitor and manage our water supply system responsibly. Seasonal water restrictions remain in effect to promote environmental stewardship and ensure that we stay within our allowable withdrawal limits under the state regulated Water Management Act.
