Lead-Free, But Water
Could Be Affected By Plumbing It’s important to know if lead is present in your plumbing because it can delay the physical or mental development of infants and children who drink water containing excess lead. It also could affect attention span and learning ability among members of this vulnerable group. Adults who drink water with excess lead over many years could develop kidney problems or high blood pressure. If you are concerned about elevated lead levels in your drinking water, you also may run your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using the water for consumption if the water has been standing for extended periods of time. This will flush out the water that may contain lead if it has been standing in pipes with lead materials. This water can be used for other household purposes, such as watering plants and cleaning clothes. Additional information is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hot Line at 800-426-4791 and our Water Quality Management Department at or 800-832-2373.
