At or above normal precipitation for the first half of 2006 has allowed Aquarion Water Company's reservoirs and wells to reach and maintain normal capacities.

Aquarion Water Company nevertheless is obligated to maintain its
Conservation Awareness Guidance, because our public water supplies are
precious resources that we must preserve continually. Your willingness to
use water wisely by not wasting it throughout the year is what allows us
to meet summertime demand when reservoir and well water capacities may fall below normal.

Year-round, we urge residents to save water indoors by turning off the tap during shaving, brushing teeth and other grooming activities, repairing faucet and toilet leaks, taking shorter showers and filling the bathtub to half its capacity. Families also may save water by using washing and dishwasher machines for full loads only and shortening wash cycles.

For outdoor use during the spring and summer months, Aquarion Water Company asks residents to conserve water, especially while using lawn irrigation systems. Because overwatering can actually weaken the lawn by encouraging shallow roots that are less tolerant of dry periods and more likely to be damaged by insects, we recommend the use of sensors that are designed to override irrigation system watering schedules. They automatically shut off if it's raining, too windy, or if adequate rainfall has provided enough moisture for the lawn. Such sensors reset to come back on when conditions are favorable.

During the fall and winter, we ask that you use water wisely by:

• Insulating hot water pipes so you don’t have to run as much water to get hot water to the faucet.
• Eliminating drafts in your home and insulating pipes with commercial wraps to avoid frozen and burst pipes.
• Using a commercial car wash that recycles water.
• Winterizing outdoor spigots to avoid pipes from bursting or freezing.
• Locating and tagging your master water shut-off valve to find it quickly in an emergency. This could save gallons of water and damage to your home if a pipe were to burst.
